The main coral reefs are in the shallow, warm water near to the land in the tropical regions of the Earth. Water temperatures of 21 ~ 30oC are ideal for coral formation.
Here are just some of the sites:
• The eastern coast of Africa
• The coasts of northeast and northwest Australia
• Polynesia
• The Caribbean
• The southern coast of India
• The Red Sea
• Florida, USA
• The coast of Brazil
The Great Barrier Reef, off the coast of NE Australia is 2000 kilometres long and is the largest coral reef in the world. By 2020, this reef, and other such as the one at Kathmandu in Nepal and another ten popular natural tourist sites could be closed permanently to visitors because of the damage that tourism does to the reefs. A cap on visitors is seen as a first option to prevent the snorkelling, boating and general wear and tear because of sea activity that can do untold damage.
