    Newcastle situated on the banks of the river Tyne in the north eastern part of the country was one of the most important cities in England in the times of the Industrial Revolution; the city was a major center of the ship building and heavy industries center. The Industrial heritage of the city can be seen in several museums that dot the length and breadth of the city.

    Newcastle is home to three train museums that seek to portray the industrial development that took place in the region from the perspective of the railways. The museums are the Stephenson Railway Museum, Beamish Museum and the Tanfield Railway line.

    The Stephenson Railway Museum located in North Shields, about 1.5 miles north of Percy Main metro station was opened in 1986 and is the northern terminus of the North Tyneside Steam Railway; it is built in honor of George and Robert Stephenson who first introduce railways in the region.

    Beamish in the town of Stanley, County Durham is an open air museum that depicts life as it was in the early 20th century with the town's railway line where visitors can enjoy a ride being one of its main highlights.

    The Tanfield Railway in County Durham is home to steam and diesel locomotives from the 19th century and also features one of the oldest working railway line dating 1725.
