The fundamental meaning of hyper as a prefix means "extreme or extremely." For instance when we say hypertension, we mean a condition in which the stress level is at its peak, which results in the debilitating illness. In the same vein, "hyperactive" means a state in which a person is intensely or excessively active.

The word hyper as a prefix comes from the Greek prefix "huper" which meant "beyond or over." Hyper as an English prefix has been of use since the 17th century, and many terms such as hypercritical and hypersensitive have been relatively new. There are some words like "hyperbole," however, which are of the Greek origin.

Some of the words which start with "hyper" as a prefix are: hyperspace (exceeding three dimensions), hyperflexion (flexing of a limb or leg beyond its usual range) and hypertext (links on a webpage or electronic document that enables the user to access another page or content matter in another page)
