    There are  shops open in the larger towns. Chester shops might be worth exploring. There are some rugby matches on today.
    Pantomines are popular on New Years Day,the Wizard of Oz in on in Chester, Stockport and Crewe also have pantomines on.Eating out is a good thing to do today. Most pubs with resturants are open all day.
    If you want to be out doors there are plenty of places to walk and explore. Chester has the town walls which are well worth walking around and plenty of interesting buildings to take in.
    Parks and gardens are worth visiting too.
    If you want to be near the sea you could go along to the Wirral and have a walk along the shore at Hoylake.
    For shoppers there's Cheshire Oaks retail outlet  at Ellesmere Port.
