Can I Injure Myself From Coughing?

In theory, yes, it is possible to fracture you ribs with severe coughing. This usually only occurs though with the elderly or people who are already chronically ill.

Cough medication is your best bet to reduce how much you are coughing. If the coughing persists, please see your doctor.

I had a bad cough due to pneumonia and came down with pleurisy,
which is your lungs expand rub the rib cage internally and I coughed and broke my last two ribs on my right side. I went to ER and they x-rayed my ribs and they were broken. Not much they can do about them so they had to heal on their own.
