What Is Graphite?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Graphite basically is one of the allotropes of carbon. Dissimilar from diamond, graphite is an electrical conductor, and can be applied as a substance in the electrodes of an electrical arc lamp.

Graphite is also well known for being the most constant type of solid carbon ever found. It is also thought to be the uppermost grade of coal, but is not used a form of fuel since it is difficult to ignite. The acoustic and thermal attributes of graphite are extremely anistropic, because phonons spread rapidly along the closely-bound planes, but are slower to move from one particular plane to another.

Graphite can even transmit electricity because of its immense electron delocalization inside the carbon layers and these electrons move around freely, and are able to transmit electricity.
