Why Are Macadamias So Expensive?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Macadamias are so expensive mainly because of two reasons. One is cost associated with transportation and the other one is hard shell structure.

Transportation cost: However, the macadamias trees are native to Australia, but in Hawaii their production is most. So the transportation from Hawaii lead to an increase in cost in addition to the transportation fair to its actual price.

Hard Shell: In nut families, macadamias is known for the hardest shell structure. It needs 300 pounds per square inch of pressure to break the shell. So it is generally available in the market without the shell structure. Hence, the shell breaking mechanism cost is added with its original price. It is considerably cheaper than any other shelled nuts if it is available within shell, but because of its so much hard shell structure, it is rarely available within shell.
