Can A Cracked Disc Damage A DVD Player?
The other day I put a disc in my DVD player without noticing that the disc was cracked. It wouldn't play and now no other discs will play either. Is there a way to fix this?

Nanny, according to a site article on DVD drive malfunction, a cracked disc in your optical drive does damage the driver's read/write mechanism, which basically consists of a laser positioned a hairbreadth away from the disc, and cause it to crash—literally—when it encounters the crack, because it damages the optical reader. According to the experts out there, the slightest fissure in the disc surface is like a brick wall just waiting to smash the read/write mechanism to smithereens.
It sounds like from what you describe the unit's optical reader mechanism has been damaged and needs repair. If you know someone who can repair, perhaps you can get this done more inexpensively than replacing the unit. Would definitely get an estimate first, though, as most of the gurus commenting on this problem say it might be less expensive to replace the whole unit.

Thank you, my friend. Just as I suspected and feared. Fortunately I was clever enough to get the cheapo-deluxe model, so replacing it will not be too costly. I guess that will be a lesson to me: Do not insert disc into player until you have turned the lights on in the room.
I don't think Nanny is referring to a computer DVD reader/writer, but a conventional DVD player. What about the repair part of the question?
