Are Mastiff Puppies Good With Children?
Mastiffs are usually very good with children they are familiar with. As such, Mastiffs may be an excellent, protective companion for your kids, but they will be less pleasant with children that they do not know.
As Mastiffs grow, you must keep in mind that they will become very strong, large and will weigh up to 160lb. As such, they may pose a danger to small children, in that they can accidentally hurt them when they wag their tail, or if they try to climb onto them. They are also prone to lick children, especially on the face, so you should prepare small children for this, to ensure that they are not frightened.
You should also explain to your children to avoid rough play with a Mastiff. When they are puppies, this can actually traumatize the dog, and when they become older, one does not want to send the message to the Mastiff that wild behaviour is acceptable.
All in all, most Mastiff owners find that their dog is very gentle with children, both as puppies and as older dogs.
