Wensleydale is a valley located in the Yorkshire Dales region. The Yorkshire Dales region comprises a number of valleys located in the county of Yorkshire in England. The valley of Wensleydale runs from the west to the east. It is one of the few valleys in the Yorkshire Dales which derives its name from that of a village (the village of Wensley) rather than from that of the river (the River Ure) that flows through the valley. Wensleydale was also known in the past as Uredale. The Norse spelling of the valley is Yoredale.
Upper Wensleydale comprises of villages and hamlets such as Hawes (located at the head of the valley), Hardraw (which is famous for the Hardraw Force waterfall, which arguably claims to be the highest unbroken waterfall in the country), Bainbridge, Askrigg, Aysgarth, West Burton, West Witton, Castle Bolton, Middleham, Coverham and East Witton, Leyburn and Masham (market towns) and West Tanfield, a village which is located on the edge of the Vale of Mowbray.
