A domain is a managed network under a domain server. Access to the network and other security is usually controlled by the server. A work group is a collection of network attached computers and a server is not required.

A work group and a domain both are computer groups to share resources with each other. The main difference is that you can't implement any securities on the work group and no computer has any control on the other computer. Work group is for limited computers like 10 to 20 and domain can accommodate hundred and thousands of computers.
