There was an exodus from England in the 17th century across the Atlantic Ocean for an assortment of reasons. The most noted reason for people leaving England to settle in America was for escaping the religious persecution in England by the fundamentalists called Puritans.

There was a group of rich people who chose to leave England to settle in America to make more profit using their money as capital in a growing economy. There was also a group of poor people who chose to settle in America to escape their poverty in England and find work in America.

The Puritans of the 17th Century England believed in more independence for the Church with freedom for each Church congregation. However, the changes proposed by the puritans were not agreeable to the Church authorities. And a regime of oppression started against the puritans.

In the year 1619, a small congregation set sail for America on a ship named Mayflower. The pilgrims reached Massachusetts on December 21, 1620.
