If A Mother Cat Abandons Her 4 Week Old Black Kitten What Milk Do You Feed It?

Answer Question

3 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

You can feed the baby cat regular milk, or infant formula. Make sure that the milk is room temperature. You can use an eye dropper or medicine dropper. Fill the dropper with milk, put it just on the outside corner of the kittens mouth, let the kitty get a little taste of it. Use the dropper to slowly feed the kitten. Good luck!

A young (or any) kitten given regular milk can dehydrate and die very quickly as it upsets the stomach badly and doesn't have their needed nutrition in it (no taurine can cause blindness among other problems). The rest was very good though. It would have been 4 if we still had stars. :-)

Thanks for clarifying. We have rescued several kittens over the years and have used both regular milk and infant formula. Thank you for the specifics on the importance of taurine! Will steer clear of regular milk for the kittens in the future.

Do not feed a kitten the milk we drink. It has to be kitten replacement formula. Our milk upsets their stomach which can lead to some big problems and it doesn't have the necessary nutrition and vitamins they need like Taurine. On the bright side, you can start trying a little of very watery canned food (easier adjustment if it's food flavored but drinkable the first couple of days and slowly thickened from there) and put it down a couple times a day and leave some soaked dry down that is less and less soaked over time as they begin to eat it. It usually takes a couple to three weeks or so until they are eating dry food almost or all of the time.

You may also want to have the kitten examined by a veterinarian as often there is something wrong when a mother abandons or refuses to feed a baby or even litter any longer. Thankfully we have vets that can often clear up the problem.

The milk is cheap at the vets. They also will give you the bottle to go with it.
