Rocks or minerals that are helpful in the extraction of metallic iron are known as iron ores. These ores generally contain a very rich amount of iron oxides. They vary in color from a rusty red to a shade of dark grey. The iron ore is mainly found in the form of hematite, limonite or siderite, and magnetite. Around 98-99% of iron ore is used to make steel. It is the raw material used to develop pig iron. Iron ore is mainly composed of oxygen bonded collectively into molecules with iron atoms.

The annual production of iron ore all over the world is roughly around one and a half billion metric tons. Located in Brazil, CVRD is the world's leading manufacturer of iron ore, being closely tailed by BHP-Billiton of Australia.
