An Aberdeen based inventor Robert Davidson experimented with a battery powered full-sized rail locomotive in 1837. The locomotive was called 'Galvani' and put on public exhibition in 1841. In 1879 an electric locomotive drawing power from a third rail went on display at the Berlin Exhibition. By 1885 there were three electric railways in Britain. One was in Brighton and two in Northern Ireland which used a hydro-electric power source. Tourism was the main beneficiary of this new development at first. Pier railways were developed using the new technology and narrow gauge small scale tracks also utilised electric power. The system took off along with the expansion of London's underground railways at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1903 the first steam railway, the Mersey Railway, was electrified. Many systems were in use reflecting the diverse pattern of railway ownership and at first all the power had to be generated by the railway companies themselves.
