This is a description for a 'movement' in the arts. This might be in painting, music, literature or sculpture. It describes a faction whose aim is to give expression to the artist's feelings rather than portraying a strictly accurate true-life picture of reality.
The romanticist's view is that things are best represented through an expression of temperament rather that through realist's desire to recreate a realistic idea of the subject.
For painting, the artist Delacroix might be considered an excellent example. In literature you need look no further than Goethe; Schiller and Heine. In poetry consider the work of Blake, Byron Shelley and Keats; not forgetting Wordsworth, as an embodiment of the genre. The writing of Victor Hugo can also be taken as a high point in the movement.
As romanticism is concerned with temperament it can be emerge in different periods, depending on the tastes of the time. Cubism represents a classical form, while surrealism is romantic.
