Moscow the capital of Russia and one of the largest cities in the world; the mayor of the city is Yuriy Mikhailovich Luzhkov. He has been the mayor of Moscow for the last 14 years having assumed office in 1992. Luzhkov was born in Moscow on September 21, 1936; Luzhkov studied at the Gubkin Moscow Petrochemical and Gas Industry Institute from 1953 to 1958 and later was a research scientist in the Moscow Scientific Research Institute of Plastics.
He became a member of the Communist Party in 1968 and since then played an active part in politics as well as managing his professional responsibilities related to automation in the chemical industry; he served as CEO, Experimental Design Office of Automation in the Chemical Industry Ministry of the then Soviet Union.
Before being appointed as mayor Luzhkov served on the Moscow City Council and the executive branch of the city government eventually rising to the post of Chairman. Luzhkov was appointed mayor on June 6, 1992 by the President of Russia, Boris Yeltsin; Luzhkov was elected as mayor in 1996 and reelected twice in 1999 and 2003. Luzhkov also was influential in federal politics in the late 90s; he was also in the news when he tried to enforce compulsory registration as a prerequisite for settling in Moscow.
