First, (at least for a 20gig click-wheel ipod) make sure that the lock on top is not on (slider - red if locked, white if unlocked). Then press the centre button. Wait for a couple of seconds and the apple should appear in the middle of the screen.

If you have a Video ipod or a nano, press and hold the play/pause button. An apple should appear on the screen. If it does not, check that you don't have the hold switch on red. Also check that it's charged up.
