What Do The Olm, The Mudpuppy And The Waterdog Have In Common?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

All belong to a family of salamanders known as the proteid family. They are all very strange creatures, but the olm is probably the weirdest.

The olm has lungs for breathing air but it never loses the gills that it has in its larval form. It spends all of its life in the water, so it makes good use of them. It lives in underground lakes, rivers and streams in the limestone areas of Austria, Italy and Croatia. As it makes no use of its eyes, they are becoming redundant and the olm is almost blind. A layer of skin has grown over its eyes and they can now barely be seen.

Normally, the olm is a pale ghostly colour but if it does break out into the light and is exposed to the sun, it develops an amazing sun tan, first going deep violet and then completely black. Once it returns to its normal gloomy habitat, it reverts back and becomes pale and interesting once more.
