A Country is a geographical territory. It is often also taken in the sense of culture and nation and also as a political entity of state.
There are in all 195 countries in the world. Out of all these 192 are members of the United Nations. You can find a complete list of these countries at the link below:

It's really hard to come up with a definitive answer at any one point in time. The general consensus is that they number at any one time about 195, but some sources would take that over 250.
The problem is that sometimes one country lays claim to an entire country (Iraq tried to annex Kuwait, China successfully annexed Tibet). Else a country may be fighting a civil war and is due to split into more than one new country (many predict that Iraq will split into at least 3 separate nations, fairly soon; part of Ethiopia split off to become Eritrea no so long ago).
Also, an area may declare itself independent of another nation, but not be recognised as a sovereign territory by everybody else (Taiwan says it is separate from mainland China, The People's Republic of China refuses to accept this claim).
Some places are sort of semi-autonomous dependencies. Examples include Puerto Rico, the Channel Islands, the Canary Islands. You could argue these are effectively their own countries, too.

That is a complex question since different sources have different answers. Generally speaking, 195 if you count Taiwan, however, depending on whether or not the country is internationally recognized will vary that number. Some common confusion points include Scotland, Wales and England (which are part of the United Kingdom) Greenland, Palestine, and Puerto Rico since these are not fully independent countries.

There are 195 countries of the world.
Visit List of Countries with their Capitals and List of countries with their Profiles.
From these 195 countries, 192 are members of United Nations and unfortunately only these 192 are represented as total countries of world. Not included ones are the Vatican City and Kosovo, that are independent and are not members of the U.N. So 192 is not the number of countries in the world.
Taiwan was actually a member of the United Nations (and even the Security Council) until 1971, when mainland China replaced Taiwan in the organization. Taiwan continues to press for full recognition by other countries, but China claims that Taiwan is simply a province of China.
