When Is The Equinox?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Equinox occurs twice a year in March and September, usually around the 21st day of the month.

We are therefore currently approaching the Vernal Equinox or Spring Equinox. The Vernal (green) Equinox takes place when the sun is directly above the equator. At this point, there is an equal number of hours of daylight and darkness.

North of the equator, this equinox is known as the Spring Equinox because from then on the sun is now entering the northern hemisphere.

When the tilt of the Earth moves the northern hemisphere away from the sun, the Autumnal Equinox takes place. By September the sun has again returned to the equator and the tilt of the Earth moves the southern hemisphere closer to the sun.

During the Equinox, bad weather is often experienced for a few days.

The movement of the Earth in relation to the sun can also be measured by the position of the Tropics. When the sun is directly above the Tropic of Cancer it is midsummer in the northern hemisphere on June 21st and our midwinter when the sun is above the Tropic of Capricorn on December 21st.
