How Do I Become More Independent Without My Boyfriend?

Answer Question

Are you asking how to be more independent and not so dependent on your boyfriend?  I would tell you that to begin with you can think of yourself as an individual who has a boyfriend.  Do not always think of the 2 of you as a couple.  Do not always ask him what to do when it is time for you to make a decision.  Make the decision and then tell the boyfriend what you have decided.  Make plans that do not always include him.  Go out with the girlfriends and no guys allowed.  Find some alone time.  Every minute of spare time does not have to involve another person (male or female).   Be an independent thinker, you do not have to agree with everything your boyfriend says or does.  Guys can be wrong sometime and it is not against the relationship to point it out.  In fact, it can make for a better relationship if he can trust that you are honest in your feelings and thoughts.  Expect him to disagree with you from time to time.   No two humans always agree about every thing that comes along in life.  If someone tells you, "we have never had an argument or never had a fight", they are either lying or one of the two people dominates the other.  One last thing to being independent, stand up for yourself if you feel anyone is trying to take advantage of you.  Abuse can be either verbal or physical.  You do not have to tolerate either one.  I am so pleased to see someone on these boards that is interested in being a confident individual secure in your own body.
