It is difficult to find work in art related subjects such as illustration. Perhaps the best idea with a subject like this is to give it a try for a while and if you receive no work then try something else, or alternatively, you could have a job whilst trying to establish yourself as an artist.

Do everything you can to get yourself known. Create a website with your work on it, set up a MySpace profile for networking, create cards, contact publishers and agents, and do whatever you can to improve your chances of getting work. If your parents see how much effort you are putting into getting yourself known then they will take you more seriously.

Give yourself a limit to how long you try to find work. If you do this, then your parents cannot complain. Once you have exceeded your limit, start to look for another job and do the art alongside it.
