Not all vets specialize in toy breeds. I've had Chihuahuas for 20yrs and we do a slow wean from 7-8wks. Listen to what your vet tells you, then do your own research and get a second and third opinion. Chihuahua puppies shouldn't be sold until they are at least 10wks. The only reason to wean them early would be to sell them early. Too many puppies die that way. Puppies are supposed to continue to nurse even with teeth.
You should take ground up puppy food and add warm water, let it sit and let momma outside to potty. Give the puppies 45min or so to eat it before letting momma back in to clean the bowl! They should be off mom completely by the age of 8wks then you should watch them for 2 weeks for signs of hypo before letting them go to their new homes.

I was just recently told be a vet that a chihuahua or any other toy breed of dob should not be taken from it's mother's milk until AT LEAST 8 to 10 weeks. I just had to take my 6 week old chi to the vet for failure to thrive because he was taken from his mother too soon. Unfortunately, I did not know this at the time of getting the pup and it has cost me a pretty hefty vet bill. He is on IV fluids right now and is having to be fed an alternative milk from a bottle. Hope this helps!

My Vet said that a chihuahua pup should be weaned from its mom around 4-5 weeks old and completely weaned at 6 weeks of age.

To the last person that posted , I breed chihuahua's and if you let a chihuahua nurse from its mother till 8-10 weeks , do you know the strain your putting on the mother ? My vet told me 4 weeks and completely weened by 5 , not to mention the fact they are getting teeth by the age of 5 weeks .. Ouch!

I let the mother decide when it is time to wean the puppies. I use puppy chow in the blender with warm water. And let the mother nurse them as long as she wants. They have alway done well.

I have a chihuahua and she has 1 pup that is 2 weeks old, she'll be 3 weeks on Sunday. My vet told me that I can start to wean the pup from its mom at around 4-5 weeks but not to completely take her away until 6 weeks. So your puppy will be in good health if taking away from mom at 6 weeks.

Puppies usually are weaned around 6 weeks of age, start them on a soft food for a few days, and then graduate them to solid, this makes it easier for them to transition. Good luck.
