The British explorer Robert Falcon Scott on account of his expeditions to the Antarctic and his attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole during the course of which he tragically lost his life is a legendary figure in the annals of human exploration of the Earth. He was born on June 6, 1868 near Devonport in England; he made a career for himself in the Royal Navy rising to the rank of First Lieutenant aboard the flagship of the Channel fleet.

His first expedition to the Antarctic was the Discovery (1901-1902) one of the first voyages in the period which culminated in the race to attain the South Pole. Scott married Kathleen Bruce on September 14, 1908 and his son Peter Scott was born in 1909; Peter Scott went on to achieve acclaim as a painter and was a naturally gifted artist like his mother who was an accomplished sculptor of her time.
