Organic matter which was buried under the earth crust millions of years ago changed into petroleum and natural gas due to bacteria, heat and pressure. Natural gas could not come out due to huge deposits of rocks on it. Natural gas is a mixture of low boiling hydrocarbons. Major portion of natural gas is methane. It also contains small amounts of ethane, propane. Natural gas also contains smelly sulphur compounds. It is purified from these bad smelling compounds.
A big deposit of natural gas estimated to about 253.4 million million cubic feet was discovered at Sui in Balochistan in 1952 and it is commonly known as sui gas. The Pakistan Petroleum Limited discovered deposits of natural gas at Uch in 1955, Khairpur in 1956, Marzarani in 1958 and Kand Kot in 1959. The Esso Eastern discovered a big deposit of gas at Mari in 1957. Oil and gas development corporation also discovered the deposits of natural gas in Sari Sang near Karachi and hundi in 1965 and 1970. It also discovered natural gas at Dhodak and Rodho in district of Dera Ghazi Khan in Punjab and form Pirkoh in Mari Bugti. According to one estimate, a total of 167 million cubic feet gas will be obtained from these deposits.

Natural gas is gaseous fossil fuel, simply referred as gas. It primarily consists of methane with significant quantities of ethane, butane, propane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, helium and hydrogen sulphide. Before using it as fuel, it is passed through extensive processing to remove all materials except methane. All other elements are produced as by products for many purposes such as:
1: For electricity generation by using gas turbines and steam turbines.
2: It is also used to produces hydrogen gas using hydrogen reformer method.
3: It is used as vehicle fuel in the form of CNG (compressed natural gas). CNG is better and economical than petrol and diesel.
4: In homes it is used for the purpose of cooking, natural gas heated clothes dyers, central heating.
5: It is also used as a fertilizer by producing ammonia through Haber process.
6: It is used in manufacturing of different products like fabric, glass, steel, paint and plastic.
