What Is A Resistance Exercise?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

When a person breaks an arm or a leg and has to wear a cast, the muscles surrounding the injured bone become weaker and smaller.  On the other hand, muscles that are exercised regularly, become stronger and larger.

Strong muscles are good for the other systems in your body as well.  When a muscle contracts, blood vessels in the muscle are squeezed.  Blood is pushed  and blood flow is increased without the heart having to work much harder.

Resistance exercises are the most effective exercises for developping stronger and larger skeletal muscles.  This is because the muscle is required to overcome the resistance or the weight of another object.  Some resistance exercises, such as the sit-up with knees bent and back on the floor, require a person to overcome their own weight.

Other exercises, such as lifting a barbell up and down with one arm bending at the elbow, requires a muscle to overcome the weight of another object.
