Can You Tell Me About The MNR In Bolivia?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The MNR is the abbreviation for the Movimiento Nacionalista Revolucionario (or the Nationalist Revolutionary Movement), a broad-based political party established in the year 1941 in Bolivia. The MNR failed to win the presidential elections in 1951, but emerged victorious a year later.

Victor Paz Estenssoro (born on October 7, 1907 and died on June 7, 2001) served four terms as Bolivia's president. He was one of the founders of the MNR, along with Hernan Siles Zuazo and others. Paz Estenssoro was responsible for bringing about many several revolutionary changes in his country during his tenure as president, including universal adult suffrage, changes in the land reforms, rural education and nationalisation of the country's tin mines.

Paz Estenssoro and Siles Zuazo started the MNR party with the objective of establishing a revolutionary reformist movement, but later gravitated towards centrist political views. Paz Estenssoro's four terms as president of Bolivia ran from April 15, 1952 to August 6, 1956 (the first stint), August 6, 1960 to August 6, 1964 (the second stint), August 6, 1964 to November 4, 1964 (the third stint) and August 6, 1985 to August 6, 1989 (the fourth and final stint).
