President Jimmy Carter's first attempt to rescue the hostages called Operation Eagle Claw resulted in failure and a loss of public standing for the President. None the less the President was indeed planning to conduct a second rescue mission. The operation was code named Credible Sport. In involved the use of modified air crafts that could land in take off from a football field. The program was being rushed as well but it was beset with problems as well. One of the air crafts during a trial run caught fire caused by a hard touchdown after a landing rocket was fired too soon. None of the crew was killed. It was the onset of elections that resulted in the second rescue mission being planned to be called off. The Reagan administration did not have to promote any such program as the hostages were released a few hours after Jimmy Carter stepped down.
