What Is The Edinburgh Festival? What Is The Fringe?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Edinburgh Festival is actually a collection of festivals that take place in August in the city of Edinburgh on Scotland's West coast.

Currently the following festivals exist as part of the Edinburgh Festival:

    The Edinburgh International Festival
    The Edinburgh Comedy Festival
    The Edinburgh International Film Festival
    The Edinburgh Festival Fringe
    The Edinburgh Book Festival

Several other Festivals take place throughout the year including the Children's Festival and the Science Festival.

Traditionally when people talk of the Edinburgh Festival, they speak of the crazy month of August in which all the thespians in the world appear to converge on Edinburgh and fill up any possible spaces to perform.  The quality ranges from the significantly ropey, to the most amazing coup de theatres.  This is the starting place from where many successful careers have started.  Anyone who can afford a venue, a programme entry and the mounting costs of mounting the piece may take part in this festival.

The Scotsman Newspaper awards 'Fringe Firsts', awarded to the best new pieces of theatre from the Fringe Festival.  All new plays are eligible.
