NASA has a series of four large, powerful telescopes which are currently based in space. These are known as the Great Observatories satellites. They are the Hubble Space Telescope (which is abbreviated as the HST), the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (which is abbreviated as the CGRO), the Chandra X-Ray Observatory (which is abbreviated as the CXO) and the Spitzer Space Telescope (which is abbreviated as the SST).

The Hubble Space Telescope (which was formerly known as the Space Telescope, which was abbreviated as ST) was launched in the year 1990 aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery STS-31. The Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (which was formerly known as the Gamma Ray Observatory, which was abbreviated as GRO) was launched in the year 1991 aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis STS-37. It is not operating after one of its gyroscopes failed. The Chandra X-Ray Observatory (which was formerly known as the Advanced X-Ray Astronomical Facility, which was abbreviated as AXAF) was launched in the year 1999 aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia STS-93. The Spitzer Space Telescope (which was formerly known as the Space Infrared Telescope Facility, which was abbreviated as SIRTF) was launched in the year 2003 aboard a Delta II rocket.
