What Does Atheist Mean?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Atheism is basically the disbelief in the very existence of deities. This applies to any deity. It could also be thought of as the premeditated rejection of theism, which is the belief in either a God or gods. Sometimes it is denoted as simply the absence of faith in deities. If the term were to be defined in this manner, it could include people such as several agnostics, and babies.

Atheism is often associated with godlessness or immorality. This is a grave generalisation and a popular misconception. The term has its roots in the French term athéisme; coming from athée, meaning atheist; which has its roots in the Greek term atheos, meaning godless.

Agnosticism on the other hand involves some kind of skepticism when it comes to beliefs in deities.
