Bitter oranges are cultivated chiefly in the in the Mediterranean countries, These bitter oranges cannot be eaten as other citrus varieties can be, Instead the oils in their skin when released, are very pungent, and are used in citrus essence and to perfume creams and other oils.These oranges can be found in abundance in the Spanish city of Seville, Seville oranges are used to make seville marmalade which has a bitter characteristic,and which is highly prized because of this bitterness.  It is loved by many British people on buttered toast. The word Amaro is used to describe them in Italy.
