What Is An A-bike?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

It's a small folding push bike, with unusually small wheels.  Invented by Clive Sinclair.

If you have ever seen folding commuting bikes, you'll have probably seen a Brompton or Dahon bike.  They fold down to a luggage size parcel complete with carrier handle.  They can cost in excess of £400, second-hand, and that's just the 3-gear model.

The A-bike folds down to about the size of a micro-scooter -- and it weighs less, if anything.  It also has very small pneumatic tyre wheels (6 inches across).

There's a review of the A-bike in the winter 2006-2007 issue of Cycle -  the CTC inhouse members' magazine.  It looks like the A-bike will best suit teenagers and small people; it has weight and height limits.  It doesn't provide a comfy ride, but it is a relatively cheap option compared to the proper folding bikes, and provides more flexibility than catching the bus. The CTC review includes more technical details, especially noting that fixing a puncture is a pain on the A-bike.
