Is San Diego Worth A Visit?

Year round sun and vast stretches of sandy beach have gained San Diego well deserved recognition as the epitome of the Californian sun and sea ideal. Tucked away in the southern-most corner of California, San Diego is an accomplished crowd-puller for those in search of the elusive beach paradise.

Before tourism took a firm hold over the area, San Diego was a commercial fishing port. The depletion of tuna stocks off the Californian coastline, however, killed off the fishing industry around 25 years ago. Now, manufacturing, tourism and the military make up the three main planks of the economy.

By way of fortuitous recompense, the areas of San Diego formerly involved with tuna fishing are now world-class centres for the performing and visual arts. And it's to these places that many of the city's 14 million visitors per year are drawn.

Despite the extinction of the fishing industry, the sea is still strongly embedded within the city's cultural identity. Not least because of SeaWorld, home to several globally-recognized conservation projects.
