There are several commands you need to know just to move about the filesystem, eg:
      pwd shows your current directory
ls -l lists files in the current directory
cd /home takes you to the /home directory
df -h displays disk usage and free space
      less myfile Interactive file-viewing utility
man somecommand Read the manual pages for 'somecommand', eg, 'man less' shows the manual pages for the 'less' command.  Run 'man man' for more information!  Hit 'q' to leave man.

You can usually expect most commands to be the same across all Linux distros, but do check the man pages for a command before you run it, if you're not sure.  Other Unix distros (HP-UX, etc) will usually be very similar, too.
