A 3d-Printer is a miniature manufacturing facility, similar in scale to a microwave oven, which can be used to produce actual objects based on an input design. The objects produced can be of almost any three dimensional shape and constitute a kind of simple sculpture.

The material of which the "printed" objects are produced is generally simple and unvariegated - plastic is common.
3D printers exist now and are used by architects and manufacturing companies to try out designs, and by educational establishments involved in teaching design. Their high price tends to limit the potential market reach of the product, however.
Some believe that 3D-printers will plummet in cost soon and may become common household items. Although the single material constraint limits the printer to producing simple shape-based products at the moment, some of the uses envisaged in future include things like producing cups, toys, or dish racks.
