A kicker also known as a Placekicker, basically is a title given to a player in American as well as Canadian football. The kicker is primarily responsible carrying out kicking duties like field goals and often kickoffs even.
Initially the position of a kickers was not a particular defined. Till the 1960s, the kicker was nearly doubled at a different position on the roster. When the phase of "two-way" player came into usage, teams started using a specialist kicker. Due the different level of skill required, and also o avoid injuries to players; teams started using specialized players for these positions.
At times a team even has a specialized kicker who only takes care of the kickoffs and normally play's the role of a backup person in case the kicker who takes care of field goals is injured.
