Altamira is the name of a cave which is located near the town of Santillana del Mar, which is located in Cantabria in Spain. The name of the cave, Altamira is derived from two words in the Spanish language, namely the word Alta, which can literally be translated into the English language as high, and the word Mira, which can literally be translated into the English language as view.

It is famous for its cave paintings, which were drawn in the geological period which is known as the Upper Palaeolithic age. The drawings mostly feature polychrome rock paintings of wild mammals and the hands of human beings.

The Altamira cave is located at a distance of about thirty kilometres to the west of the city of Santander. The cave (and its paintings) has been declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organisation, which is abbreviated as UNESCO.
