Will The Sun Explode?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Sun doesn't have sufficient mass for it to ultimately explode in a supernova. In about 5 billion years time, when it has used up the hydrogen in its core, the outer layers will gradually expand so the sun becomes a red giant. This will effectively kill off life on Earth.

The sun's core will then shrink and become hotter as heavier elements are formed. Eventually, the outer layers will be thrown off and cool to form a planetary nebula, while the hot stellar core that remains will  also cool to form a 'white dwarf' over several billions of years.
