Who Is Disqualified From Working With Children And Vulnerable Adults In The UK?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The specifics vary slightly between England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.  But the general principles are:

    * Anyone who has ever committed a sexual offence (against anyone, of any age or capability).

    * Anyone who has ever had a child taken away from their care (or custody).

    * Anyone who has been banned from running a children's home.

    * Anyone on the Protection of Children Act (POCA) list of people deemed unsuitable to work with children.

    * Anyone who has ever committed a crime of violence, neglect or abuse of a child or vulnerable adult.

    * Anyone who has ever had their registration (as  childminders, children's home manager, etc.) refused or removed.

It is a criminal act for anyone who meets one of these conditions to apply for a job working with children or vulnerable adults.

Schools, nurseries, care homes and similar institutions are often left in a quandary where a person has merely been investigated or formally cautioned for one of the above crimes (that sort of information does get revealed with an Enhanced Disclosure from the CRB).
