What's The Enhanced Greenhouse Effect?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Greenhouse effect is a natural phenomenon. It has been around for as long as earth has had an atmosphere. It is basically the capacity of the atmosphere to trap heat energy without letting it all escape into space. This is the reason why even when there is no sun at night, the temperatures on earth are still tolerable. The atmosphere achieves this effect through the presence of certain gases that can trap heat energy. One such gas is carbon dioxide.
Greenhouse effect becomes a problem when it is 'enhanced' and hence the term 'enhanced greenhouse effect'. This enhancement is a direct result of increasing human activities. Human activities, such as driving vehicles and running industries release much more carbon dioxide into the air then can be removed. Therefore, the concentration of a gas like carbon dioxide increases in the atmosphere. This means more energy can be trapped since there are more gas molecules. The result of this is global warming and climate change. If the current trend of the rise in carbon dioxide concentration continues, the world temperatures would rise by 2-5 degrees Celsius by 2050.
Some other greenhouse gases besides carbon dioxide are:
    • methane
    • CFCs
    • ozone
    • sulphur oxides
    • nitrogen oxides
    • water vapor
