Where Does Mel Smith Come From?

    Mel Smith was born in London in 1952 on the 3rd of December. Born to middle class parents, Smith attended The University of Oxford concentrating on theatre during his early years. It was at Oxford that his first production, The Tempest took shape.
    Oxford was the place where Smith's future as an actor, was significantly altered for the better. He was a part of all the Drama societies, and it was during one of his stage shows that he was approached by John Lloyd, the British television writer and producer. It was then that he was offered his biggest role, the one in 'Not in the Nine O'clock 'news in the year 1979.
    Smith later went on, to star with Griff Rhys Jones in the hit show, Alas Smith and Jones and started their own company, 'Talkblack Productions' in 1981.

    Mel Smith, better known as, Smith from the 'Alas Smith and Jones' show on British television, is an English comedian, actor, film maker and scriptwriter. He shot to fame, with the show 'Not the Nine O'clock News' in the year 1978, after experimenting with theatre for a while.
