How Did The Term Ashes Tour Originate In Cricket?

Answer Question

The cricket test matches between England and Australia are held every two years. Ashes are the symbol of victory. Such test matches were first staged in 1877. 1882, when the Australian team won its first victory at the cricket ground of Oval, London, United Kingdom, a mock obituary was written in an English newspaper which said that the English cricket is dead and its 'body' would be cremated and the 'ashes' will be sent to Australia.

The following year, Ivo Bligh, led the English cricket team to Australia. He promised to try and bring the 'ashes' back to their country. The English cricket team won and an urn containing the ashes of a wicket stump was presented to the English cricket team by some of the Australian women.

The urn is now kept at the Lord's Cricket Ground which is the headquarters of Marylebone Cricket Club. Now the team which wins is said to have retain the ashes.
