What Is The Closest Galaxy To Ours?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

That would be the ANDROMEDA GALAXY (not actually IN Andromeda of course) also called M31 as it was the 31st item listed in Messier's catalogue of galaxies and nebulae.

It is about 2.5 million light years away from our own Milky Way galaxy and is larger, but probably less massive.

The nearest major galaxy to ours is Andromeda, at 2.2 million light years away. It is the largest galaxy in a group of 40 that comprise our local group of which we are the second largest, being smaller than only Andromeda. Scientists believe that Andromeda and ourselves are on a collision course and will smash into each other in about 3 billion years.
