What Opposition Did The Churches Have To Hitler?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The opposition in the churches to Hitler policies was strong. First of all, Catholic Churchmen were badly treated by the Nazis. Hitler didn't like Catholic youth organisations and movements because he wanted all the youth to join the Hitler Youth.
Protestant churchmen were also treated badly. One Protestant leader, Martin Niemoller, was arrested by the Gestapo after preaching an anti-Nazi sermon, and kept in solitary confinement in a concentration camp for seven years. Eventually the Nazis set up their own church 'The National Reich Church' and said that only national Orators of the Reich were allowed to speak. They stopped the sale of the Bible in Germany and removed the Bible, the cross, the Tabernacle and all other religious objects from church altars across the country. These were replaced by nothing but Mein Kampf (Hitler's biography written when he was in prison) and to the left of that, a sword.
