When My Female Dog Is Having Puppies Should I Have The Father Around?

Answer Question

Well if the dog is not aggressive then one can let him be around. Usually breeders do not let the male dog around when the female dog is having puppies. Anyway it would be best to let the female dog find a cozy spot to give birth with minimum of trouble and as such it would be a good idea to leave her alone without anyone, man or dog around.

Even in the wild it is the female dog that is mainly concerned in rearing the puppies and as such the male dog has little or no role to play other than hunting prey and perhaps protecting the puppies if need be from any harm. In fact in some species the female dog after the birth of the puppies generally does not allow the male dog to come near the puppies. Also it would be a good idea to take pet insurance especially if your dog is going to give birth as it would provide cover for any expenses accrued due to the dog and the puppies.

Most females become very aggressive when the pups are born...also in the wild male dogs are usually not around the pups at first. Introduce the pups to the father when they are a little older.

Best not to have any other pets around her at all while she gives birth, as their presence may inhibit her birthing.  Most bitches will protect their pups from other dogs until they are toddling, at about 3-4 weeks.  For the father's sake I would not expose him to aggression from the bitch.  He will also not like it at all if the pups mistake his undercarriage for teats, if you see what I mean.

It depends on the dogs if they are mother and father together all the time it seems ok
dogs are a pack animal  the mother does not let him pay much attention until about 4-5 weeks

Not best, you could make her uneasy, she more than likely will not want the male to be around, til the pups are older
