Could Living By A Crossroads Affect Our Health?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

It is thought that traffic pollution is actually at its worst near a busy junction, because cars release more fumes when they stop and start.  If there are tall buildings near the crossroads, then these will effectively 'trap' the traffic pollution and so pollution rates will be significantly high.
If the cross roads is in the country however, then the risk will be much lower and it is overall probably much safer in terms of pollution than living in a town or city.
However, if you have young children or are planning a family, then it may be sensible to think about moving home.  The very young (or indeed the very old) and people who have a history of heart and or lung disease are particularly susceptible to chest complaints caused by poor air quality.  Air which is by the sea is usually felt to be the healthiest air, due to the negative ions it contains.
