Can Someone Tell Me What The Word "Nerd" Means?
At first I thought nerd was another word for "geek". Then I got the idea that it was slightly insulting, and roughly equivalent to the word "swot". You know, what the ordinary kids at school used to call the clever, scrawny kid who wore glasses and worked ever so hard, but was no good at sport! Since then I think I have seen it used as a real insult, almost like calling someone an idiot. Can someone please enlighten me?

So it can mean anything from eccentric genius to village idiot. No wonder I am confused! But I do see the point. I once knew an absolutely brilliant Doctor of Divinity in Cambridge University who was barely safe to walk down the street when he was thinking great thoughts because his mind was just not on where he was going. He would occasionally have us ordinary mortals in stitches over the odd things he would say in all seriousness. The thing we all remembered most about him was that when he read in public from the New Testament he would read at normal speed in English from the Greek text. A brilliant, brilliant man and charming and modest too. But as for common sense and streetwise; forget it!
i had a next door neighbor at the age of three that could read the newspaper and at the age of four could speak German. at the age of ten he was doing calculus in his head. but he could not handle it when others spoke or interrupted him and would continually talk to himself.
Was he an autistic savant by any chance? You know, like Dustin Hoffman's character in the film, Rainman.
