What Films Have Been Made About Cleopatra?

Cleopatra the legendary Queen of Egypt has been depicted in several films that mainly highlight her reputation as a seductress in history that caused a civil war in the Roman Empire. Her affairs with Julius Caesar and the Roman general Mark Antony have been the main episodes that have been depicted in the films made about her.

Up to now 4 movies with the title Cleopatra have been created the first being in 1917 and the latest being the one released in 1999. The most famous one was the 1963 film Cleopatra starring Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra, Richard Burton as Mark Antony and Rex Harrison as Julius Caesar which went on to win the Oscar award; it was one of the costliest movies ever made with $44 million being spent in production.

Several other films have been made based upon Cleopatra like Antony and Cleopatra (1974) which was performed by London's Royal Shakespeare Company, Serpent of the Nile (1953) and Caesar and Cleopatra (1946).
